Love Field Potteries

Churns

Churns are by far the most commonly found examples of Love Field pottery. Sizes ranged from 1-8 gal. The most commonly found churns are the  2, 3 and 4 gallon examples while the  1, 6, 7 and 8 gallon churns are much harder to come by. Love Field manufactured two different types of churns. Both of which are Bristol white glazed and stamped in blue cobalt with the company logo. The most common is smaller and lacks the double blue bands of the larger version (pictured top left). The un-banned versions all have small holes on opposing sides of the churn just above the small side handles while the banned ones do not. The holes do not pass completely through into the interior of the crock and are thus blind holes.

The holes were designed as attaching points for a wire bale type handle that acted similar to ice tongs when lifted. The handles were used to move them empty crock not carry it when it was full. When full the crock were crab walked or scooted to the desired location.

It should be noted that while the double blue bands are rare on churns; that is not the case with water coolers. In fact all of the water coolers I have seen have been marked with the double blue bands above the logo.  Churns can be found marked with either the Mono or the Bi-Pane Logos.

Another interesting variations in the churns produced by Love Field are what I will call straight churns. These churns do not have the flared lip at top as do the other churns. The top lip is inset and vertical from the exterior walls of the jug. The churn on the right has its lid in place. The dasher goes through a hole in the the raised center portion of the lid.  Compare the pictures on this page and the difference will be obvious. These are harder to locate than are their standard flared lip brethren.
