Saggar

Saggar is the name given to a firing  process that is derived from an ancient Chinese method. The Chinese used saggars to protect pieces from flame impingement, falling ash or other debris that occurs in fuel burning kilns. Today saggars are used to produce exactly the opposite effect. Saggars now function as containers in which to produce localized surface effects by exposing the work to combustible and volatile materials.  The end result is  a beautiful and unique design on each and every piece.
