Raku is the name given to a pottery glazing art form that originated in Japan in the sixteenth century and is used today in the ancient Japanese tea ceremonies. The process involves the rapid cooling of a glaze fired ware. Glazed pots are fired in a kiln to 1800 degrees. The red hot pieces are then taken out of the kiln with tongs and placed in covered containers filled with something combustible such as straw or leaves. Flames from the ignited material create the flash effect and crackle pattern that make each piece unique.
All pieces listed, except Indians, are available in Flash or Crackle glaze. Crackle glaze is available in 3 shades: Cobalt, Emerald and Traditional White. Indians are only available in flash glaze only.
